About
Telangana's backward castes (BCs) have historically been an integral part of the region's socio-political landscape. During the Telangana movement, these communities played a pivotal role, contributing through sacrifices, grassroots mobilisation, leadership, cultural assertion, and a strong push for socio-political and economic justice. Their active participation was crucial to the movement's success, ultimately leading to the Telangana state's formation in 2014.
However, the post-formation period has highlighted significant gaps in addressing the needs and aspirations of BCs in Telangana. BC communities have been consistently marginalised in the new state's political sphere despite constituting more than 50% of the population. In the recent assembly elections conducted in 2023, only 19 members from the BC communities have been elected to the State legislature (119 elected members). The Upper castes Reddy, Velama and Kamma communities constituting about 10% of the population, make up about 50% of the elected members in the State legislature. This disparity has led to widespread discontent and a deep sense of disenfranchisement among BC communities.
Recognizing the dire state of political representation for backward castes and the critical need for change, Jana Adhikara Samithi was established in 2020, under the mentorship of Shri Parikipandla Narahari, as a dedicated platform to empower BC communities. The organization aims to politically empower the BC communities, address the ongoing challenges faced by BC communities and advocate for their rightful place in Telangana's socio-political framework.
